P4 UNIVERSITY OF DUISBURG-ESSEN

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) was founded 2003 and is one of the youngest and with almost 6,000 employees and over 42,000 students also largest universities in Germany. It is located at the centre of the Ruhr metropolis and also plays a major role internationally, holding place 19 in the Times Higher Education Ranking of the world’s 200 best young universities. As a member of the University Alliance Ruhr with partnerships around the globe, it has a far-reaching network.

The motto “Open-minded” stands for innovative teaching and research – and for diversity and genuine educational equality. An extensive mentoring system (among other things) helps make a student’s stay at the UDE a success. The UDE is also strong on research. This is evident in many ways, not least being the steady growth of the fundraising sector: each year the total volume of research funds acquired by the university – including third-party funds for medical research – will distinctly exceed the 100-million-euro mark.

With the Centre for Aquatic and Environmental Research (ZWU) the UDE nucleates leading researchers from different fields in environmental science. Among these are experts in aquatic biomonitoring and ecotoxicology. Especially in the field of molecular biomonitoring, UDE holds great expertise, also hosting a dedicated EU COST Action (CA15219). With three biological Bachelor of Science and five Master of Science courses in environmental and aquatic research, UDE is strongly involved in training students in the field of environmental and aquatic research.
